Inter Miami selects defender
Ambrose taken in Stage One of the Re-Entry Process
After trading with FC Cincinnati for the No. 1 position earlier this month, Inter Miami CF has selected defender Mikey Ambrose in Stage One of the MLS ReEntry Process on Wednesday.
Ambrose, who is a fouryear MLS veteran, joins Miami after a three-year stint with the Atlanta United.
The 26-year-old started for Atlanta in their 2-0 postseason victory over Philadelphia Union.
Beginning his career with Orlando City SC in 2016, the left back has appeared in 25 matches in his professional career.
The El Paso, Texas native has represented the United States men’s national team at the Under-17,-18 and -20 levels.
He played his college ball at the University of Maryland.
The MLS Re-Entry Process, which was previously called the Re-Entry Draft, enables teams to sign outof-contract players from within the league that meet specific qualifications. MLS does not have free agency like many other pro sports leagues.
Clubs must exercise options or extend a “Bona Fide offer” to all players picked in Stage One, and teams may not select their own draft-eligible players. Players with option years remaining on their deals will automatically be included to the drafting club’s roster.
If a player rejects the offer, the drafting club will hold the Right of First Refusal for the player in the league.
The second stage of the MLS Re-Entry Process is Dec. 3.
Along with the Re-Entry Process, the league also holds the MLS Expansion Draft and the SuperDraft. The MLS SuperDraft, coming up in January, is similar to the other main drafts of major professional sports leagues.
MLS rosters are capped at 30 players while teams are only allowed to dress 18 players for each game.
