Stranahan senior Dave Herard is still getting back into the flow of playing basketball.

The standout guard is also a talented football player who is signed to play cornerback for Virginia.

“It’s kind of tough because at the same time, I’m still working out for football,” Herard said. “So my football can come into my basketball game. You can see that when I’m running down the floor.”

But Herard, who helped lead the Mighty Dragons to the Class 6A championship last year, is quickly rounding back into basketball form. His 19 points led Stranahan (13-6) to a 67-51 win over Miramar (11-4) on Monday night in Fort Lauderdale.

“Dave’s pretty consistent right now,” Mighty Dragons coach Terrence Williams said. “He’s getting out of that football phase, and as long as we can get him to keep improving day-by-day, we’ll be all right.”

Stranahan fell behind early in the first quarter but quickly rebounded. Once the Mighty Dragons took the lead in the first quarter, they held it throughout the night. Miramar started a fourth-quarter comeback attempt, cutting Stranahan’s lead from 16 points to nine points, but Herard helped put an end to that with a pair of threes to extend the lead back to 17.

Thaddeus Squire finished second in scoring for Stranahan, racking up 13 points.

Fab Five selection Inady points and 10 rebounds.

“I think we finally reached some points we’ve been talking about all this season,” Williams said.

Brent Davis led Miramar with 18 points, but the Mighty Dragons utilized a highpressure defense that forced multiple turnovers and kept the Patriots offense from getting in a groove.

“That was really big,” Williams said. “lately it’s been on the other side, but we were able to force turnovers tonight, and some of them, we were able to capitalize, which is huge for us.”
