Alonso’s coaching staff has a mix of levels of experience
Inter Miami CF announced coach Diego Alonso’s coaching staff ahead of its inaugural season in the MLS on Monday.
Alonso’s staff will have international championship-winning coaches mixed coaches with experience in multiple levels of U.S. soccer — including the MLS, United Soccer League (USL) and U.S. Soccer Development Academy.
Alonso’s full coaching staff includes: Claudio Arzeno as an assistant coach; Mauricio Marchetti as an assistant coach and fitness coach; Gustavo Metral as a sports scientist; Anthony Pulis as an assistant coach; Albert Rudé as an assistant coach; Sebastián Saja as a goalkeeper coach; Brett Uttley as an assistant coach and video analyst.
“We’re thrilled to combine a championship-winning and experienced coaching staff that aligns with the Club’s ambitions and culture to support Diego’s team,” Inter Miami sporting director Paul McDonough said in a statement. “We’re confident their previous national and international success will transition to Inter Miami and lead the Club to become one of the best in the Americas. We’re looking forward to the great things we’ll achieve together.”
Arzeno was an assistant coach on Alonzo’s CONCACAF Champions League titlewinning staff at C.F. Pachuca and C.F. Monterrey. He began his playing career for first division club Atlético Independiente in his native Argentina, where he won one Recopa Sudamericana and two Supercopas Sudamericanas, before making a move to Spain where he would make over 100 appearances.
Marchetti, who’s Uruguayans like Alonso, and Metral will hold the same positions that they had under Alonso at Pachuca and Monterrey during the clubs’ title runs.
Pulis was most recently the head coach of Saint Louis FC in the USL Championship. He’s the son of long-time English Premier League manager Anthony “Tony” Pulis, and played in England for several years before finishing his playing career with the Orlando City SC in 2014.
Rudé was an assistant coach on Alonso’s staff at Pachuca from 2015 to 2018 and later joined him at Monterrey in 2019. The Spaniard was also the Department of Sports Intelligence and Performance Analysis Coordinator at Rayados.
Saja was promoted from the Inter Miami CF Academy where he was the goalkeeper coordinator and coach. The Argentine spent most of his playing career with club Atlético San Lorenzo de Almagro and Racing Club in Argentina’s first division before retiring in 2017. He received four senior caps for the Argentine national team.
Uttley was most recently the first assistant coach for Rio Grande Valley FC, the second team of the Houston Dynamo playing in the USL Championship.
