Broward County’s death toll from the new coronavirus now stands at 207 people, with more than 1,300 dead across Florida.

The Florida Department of Health on Sunday also reported 5,312 people have been diagnosed with COVID-19 in the county since the outbreak began. That includes 1,056 people who have been treated at local hospitals.

It’s a one-day increase of three deaths and 54 cases. Broward is second in the state, behind Miami-Dade, for the number of people who have died or gotten infected. Gov. Ron DeSantis said South Florida’s higher concentration of cases is why the region is not included in the first phase of the state’s reopening, which starts Monday.

Across Florida, at least 1,379 people have died from infections. That’s a rise of 15 reported deaths over the previous day.

The state also says 429,970 people have been swabbed for COVID-19, and 36,078 have tested positive. That’s a rate of about 8.4%. But the rate of positive cases is higher in South Florida: 13.7% in MiamiDade County and about 10.3% in Broward and Palm Beach counties

A total of 369 people have died in Miami-Dade County, as part of the county’s 12,775 cases.

Palm Beach County has seen 196 deaths and 3,130 people diagnosed with COVID-19.

The United States had more than 1.1 million coronavirus cases with 67,000 deaths as of Sunday morning.

The Johns Hopkins University & Medicine Coronavirus Resource Center reported there have been almost 3.5 million cases worldwide and 244,295 people have died.
