Former Hurricanes, Dolphins RB Gore signs with longtime rival Jets

- By Keven Lerner

Frank Gore, the former Miami Hurricanes star and Miami Dolphins running back, will be reunited with New York Jets coach Adam Gase.

Gore agreed to terms on a oneyear contract with the Jets, his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, announced Tuesday. Gore is expected to remove some of the burden off workhorse back Le’Veon Bell with the Jets.

Gore, who turns 37 next Thursday, recently said he has no plans of retiring. His latest stop in the AFC East has him playing for every team in the division except the New England Patriots.

The 15-year-veteran spent the 2018 season with Gase and the Dolphins before signing a oneyear, $2 million contract with the Buffalo Bills last offseason. Gase also spent time with Gore in 2008 while he was an offensive assistant with the San Francisco 49ers.

Last season, Gore rushed for 599 yards on 166 carries — both career lows — with the Bills while splitting time with former FAU standout Devin Singletary.

Gore ranks third on the NFL’s all-time rushing list with 15,347 yards, trailing only Emmitt Smith (18,355) and Walter Payton (16,726). Last season, he passed Barry Sanders, who ran for 15,269 yards.

Gore also is fourth all time with 19,243 yards from scrimmage, surpassing Marshall Faulk (19,154) last season.

The five-time Pro Bowl tailback started 14 games for his hometown Dolphins in 2018 and led the team in rushing attempts (156) and yards (722).

Gore spent the first 10 years of his illustrious career with the 49ers (2005-14) before joining the Indianapolis Colts (2015-17).

The former Coral Gables High standout was inducted into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame in 2018.

Gore, who set a Miami-Dade County high school rushing record in 2000 with 2,953 yards and 34 touchdowns, rushed for 1,975 yards at UM (2001-04) despite dealing with multiple knee injuries.

Gore, a third-round draft pick of the 49ers in 2005, will likely be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame when his career finally does come to a close. While he isn’t expected to be a firstballot choice, he seems bound to wear a gold jacket someday.
