’Fins Tua picks No. 1

- By Omar Kelly

Miami Dolphins fans eager to know what jersey number rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa will wear in upcoming seasons finally have their answer.

The Dolphins tweeted out a series of numbers for the team’s crop of rookies and free agents, and it disclosed that the former Alabama standout Miami selected with the fifth pick in the 2020 NFL draft will wear No. 1.

Tagovailoa wore No. 13 during his three seasons at Alabama, but that number belonged to Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino, and Tagovailoa made it clear he’d never ask the franchise to unretire Marino’s number so he could wear it.

“I’m not too worried about what number I have. I understand No. 13 is retired, and it should be,”

Tagovailoa said on draft night. “Dan Marino, he’s the goat. He’s like the mayor out there and I have much respect for him.”

Tagovailoa did wear No. 11 in high school, but Dolphins receiver DeVante Parker has owned the number for the past five seasons.

No. 2 was an option for Tagovailoa, but that number was worn by punter Matt Haack, and No. 3 is already occupied by fellow quarterback Josh Rosen.

So No. 1 it was, and his jersey is already on sale on the Miami Dolphins website for $99.99.

Austin Jackson, the USC left tackle the Dolphins selected with the draft’s 18th pick, will wear No. 73.

Auburn cornerback Noah Igbinoghene, who the Dolphins selected with the 30th pick in the 2020 draft, will wear No. 46.

Offensive lineman Robert Hunt, who was the 39th pick, will wear No. 68, and Georgia offensive linemen Solomon Kindley, Miami’s fourth-round pick, will wear No. 66.

Defensive tackle Raekwon Davis, Miami’s second second-round pick, will wear No. 98.

Safety Brandon Jones, the former Texas standout the Dolphins selected in the third round, will wear No. 45.

Defensive linemen Jason Strowbridge will wear No. 58, and Curtis Weaver will wear No. 96.

Long snapper Blake Ferguson, the Dolphins’ sixthround pick, will wear No. 50, and tailback Malcolm Perry, the Navy standout the Dolphins used a seventh-round pick to select, will wear No. 10.

The Dolphins also announced the numbers for the veterans Miami added this offseason.

Tailbacks Matt Breida will wear No. 20, and Jordan Howard will wear No. 34.

Cornerback Byron Jones will wear No. 24. He wore 31 during his tenure with the Dallas Cowboys, but that number belongs to cornerback Ken Webster.

Linebacker Kyle Van Noy will wear No. 53, which happens to be the same number he wore in New England. That number became available when Miami waived defensive tackler Gerald Willis last month.

Linebacker Elandon Roberts will wear No. 44, and Kamu Grugier-Hill will wear No. 51.

Offensive linemen Ereck Flowers will wear No. 75 and Ted Karras will wear No. 67.

Pass rusher Shaq Lawson will wear No. 90, which happens to be the same number he wore in Buffalo. That number became available last week when Miami traded Charles Harris to the Falcons

for a 2021 seventhround pick. And Emmanuel Ogbah will wear No. 91. He wore 90 during his time in Kansas City.

Tight end Michael Roberts will wear No. 89, safety Clayton Fejedelem will wear No. 42, and safety Kavon Frazier will wear No. 35.

Cornerback Ryan Lewis switched from No. 24 to No. 29. Tailback Patrick Laird switched from No. 42 to 32, and tailback De’Lance Turner changed from 34 to 41. Linebacker James Crawford changed his number from 51 to 57.
