South Florida has now had more than 35,000 cases of the new coronavirus, state figures published Monday show, as the statewide total approaches 65,000.

The Department of Health also reported the state has had a total of 64,904 cases — 966 more than on Sunday.

The number of new cases is something positive. Monday was the first time since last week that the number of new Florida cases fell below 1,000. For the previous five days, the number of new cases was higher than 1,000.

South Florida leads the state in the number of cases. As of Monday, Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties have had 35,009 cases, 428 more than the day before.

The numbers are what the Department of Health reports, but they may understate the extent of coronavirus cases and deaths in Florida. A Washington Post investigation published Monday said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention wants states to report probable coronavirus cases and deaths, but Florida is one of many states that isn’t doing so.

The total number of deaths in Florida from coronavirus is 2,712, an increase of 12 from Sunday.

State reports show the three South Florida counties accounted for 1,483 deaths as of Monday, an increase of seven over the previous 24 hours.

The Department of Health released Monday show: reports

Miami-Dade County, the Florida coronavirus hot spot, has had 19,756 cases, an increase of 209 from Sunday. The number of deaths in Miami-Dade, 767, is two more than it was a day earlier. Miami-Dade County, which has 13% of the state’s population, has 30% of the state’s cases and 28% of the deaths.

Broward has had 7,924 cases, 120 more than Sunday. It has had 343 deaths, four more than the day before.

Palm Beach County has had 7,329 cases, 99 more than Sunday. It has had 373 deaths, one more than the day before.

The state reported 11,008 people have been treated in Florida hospitals for COVID-19 illness since the beginning of pandemic-related record-keeping, an increase of 66 since Saturday.

South Florida has had 6,131 hospitalizations, an increase of 29 over the previous 24 hours.
