Fort Lauderdale – Fort Lauderdale is advising against swimming, fishing, jet-skiing, paddleboarding, kayaking, canoeing and other waterrelated activities in a small portion of the Las Olas Isles area, as well as an area near the Coral Shores neighborhood, due to higher than acceptable bacteria levels.

The city said Friday that a sewer overflow occurred when a bypass pump being operated by a contractor working near Bayview Drive malfunctioned. The area impacted by this precautionary waterway advisory extends from Northeast 30th Street to the north, Northeast 29th Street to the south, the Intracoastal Waterway to the east and Bayview Drive Southeast to the west.

The city had a similar incident Tuesday in the Las Olas neighborhood, where a waterway advisory is also in place. It announced that heavy rains overloaded its wastewater pipes causing sewage to seep out of several manholes in the area. The city stated in the advisory that the seepage was minor.

As of Friday, the general area impacted by this precautionary notice extended from Southeast 1st Street to the north, Las Olas Boulevard to the south, Nurmi Drive to the east, and Fiesta Way to the west.

The city said the advisories will remain in effect until tests show that bacteria levels in the water have decreased in accordance with safety standards.
