American Heritage star Williams elects to stay home, commits to UM
James Williams is staying home
The American Heritage five-star defensive back announced his commitment to Miami, choosing the Hurricanes over Alabama, Clemson, Georgia and others.
Williams is the highestrated player in Broward or Palm Beach counties, according to 247Sports’ composite rankings. He is listed as the No. 9 overall player in the 2021 class, the No. 1 athlete and the No. 1 player in Florida.”
Williams wrote in a message on Twitter that he would be shutting down his recruitment and signing with Miami. The early signing period begins Dec. 16. If he signs with Miami, he would be their highest-ranked signee since Seantrel Henderson in 2010.
Williams, who was a 2019 Super 11 selection, was a first-team all-county pick as a sophomore and a junior.
He played for American Heritage as a sophomore, making 64 tackles for the Patriots while leading the team with four interceptions.
Last year, while at Western, Williams had 62 tackles and intercepted six passes. He also had 139 receiving yards and three touchdowns on offense,
Williams has played for three high schools, starting his career at Miami Monsignor Pace before transferring to American Heritage before his sophomore year. Williams transferred to Western for his junior season and announced Jan. 7 thathe was transferring back to American Heritage.
Williams was previously committed to the Miami
Hurricanes but decommitted on May 7, 2019. He joins Chaminade-Madonna’s Andres Borregales, Thad Franklin and Allan Haye, Plantation’s Jacolby George and Stoneman Douglas’ Michael McLaughlin in the Hurricanes’ 2021 class.
Williams is one of the top-rated Broward County recruits in recent years. He has been ranked as high as No. 5 in the 247Sports composite rankings.
The last Broward County player to be in the composite ranking’s top 10 was American Heritage 2018 cornerback Patrick Surtain II, who was No. 6 in the final class rankings.
