American Heritage star Williams elects to stay home, commits to UM

James Williams is staying home

The American Heritage five-star defensive back announced his commitment to Miami, choosing the Hurricanes over Alabama, Clemson, Georgia and others.

Williams is the highestrat­ed player in Broward or Palm Beach counties, according to 247Sports’ composite rankings. He is listed as the No. 9 overall player in the 2021 class, the No. 1 athlete and the No. 1 player in Florida.”

Williams wrote in a message on Twitter that he would be shutting down his recruitmen­t and signing with Miami. The early signing period begins Dec. 16. If he signs with Miami, he would be their highest-ranked signee since Seantrel Henderson in 2010.

Williams, who was a 2019 Super 11 selection, was a first-team all-county pick as a sophomore and a junior.

He played for American Heritage as a sophomore, making 64 tackles for the Patriots while leading the team with four intercepti­ons.

Last year, while at Western, Williams had 62 tackles and intercepte­d six passes. He also had 139 receiving yards and three touchdowns on offense,

Williams has played for three high schools, starting his career at Miami Monsignor Pace before transferri­ng to American Heritage before his sophomore year. Williams transferre­d to Western for his junior season and announced Jan. 7 thathe was transferri­ng back to American Heritage.

Williams was previously committed to the Miami

Hurricanes but decommitte­d on May 7, 2019. He joins Chaminade-Madonna’s Andres Borregales, Thad Franklin and Allan Haye, Plantation’s Jacolby George and Stoneman Douglas’ Michael McLaughlin in the Hurricanes’ 2021 class.

Williams is one of the top-rated Broward County recruits in recent years. He has been ranked as high as No. 5 in the 247Sports composite rankings.

The last Broward County player to be in the composite ranking’s top 10 was American Heritage 2018 cornerback Patrick Surtain II, who was No. 6 in the final class rankings.
