Hurricanes add Miami Palmetto WR Smith
The momentum just continues to build for the Miami Hurricanes’ 2021 recruiting class.
UM added the commitment of speedy three-star slot receiver Brashard Smith of Miami Palmetto on Sunday evening. Smith added in his Twitter and Instagram post that he will be shutting down his recruitment and ultimately signing with Miami when the time comes.
Smith, a 5-foot-9, 190-pound Under Armour All-American, was committed to Florida earlier this year, pledging to the Gators in March and backing off that commitment in early May. Auburn, Tennessee and Oregon were also in Smith’s top five released in May.
His high school coach at Palmetto, Mike Manasco, previously told the South Florida Sun Sentinel a commitment announcement for Smith appeared imminent with the Hurricanes the favorite to land him.
“I think Brashard Smith absolutely loves what [new offensive coordinator] Rhett Lashlee brings to the table, and they’ve done a great job of recruiting him with this new offensive staff,” Manasco said.
The addition of Smith puts UM at 20 commitments in the 2021 class, ranking the Hurricanes eighth in the Rivals team rankings and 10th by 247 Sports. They were 10th and 11th in those rankings, respectively, before the commitment.
Smith joins Plantation’s Jacolby George and Miami Northwestern’s Romello Brinson, both four-star prospects, as top South Florida receivers in the class.
Miami has been stocking up on top local talent during the coronavirus pandemic — also notable of late was adding five-star American Heritage safety James Williams on Tuesday night. Seventeen of UM’s 20 recruits committed play high school football in Miami-Dade or Broward counties.
Smith gives the Hurricanes two commitments from the highly coveted Palmetto Five. They also have four-star defensive tackle Savion Collins in the 2021 class.
Five-star defensive tackle Leonard Taylor is choosing between Miami and Florida, and is set to announce a decision at 1 p.m. on Aug. 6. Four-star safety Corey Collier has publicly released a commitment date of Aug. 10. He and five-star cornerback Jason Marshall also have Miami among their top schools.
