Though the future is uncertain, the South Florida theater community celebrated its top shows in a virtual Carbonell Awards ceremony on Monday. Top honors went to Zoetic Stage’s “Sweeney Todd,” tying with a show from 1999 as the most awarded in Carbonell history.

“Sweeney Todd” picked up eight awards, including Best Musical and Best Director for Stuart Meltzer, who also won directing honors for Zoetic’s “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time.”

Jeni Hacker won double acting awards as well, for “Sweeney Todd” and the Ronnie Larsen Presents production “Grindr Mom.”

Zoetic Stage in Miami dominated, winning 12 awards. Palm Beach Dramaworks and The Wick Theatre brought Palm Beach County four awards. In Broward County, New City Players and Ronnie Larsen Presents won four awards.

The annual event went virtual for the first time, presenting awards in the 20 competitive categories through YouTube. The ceremony was produced by Fantel Music, a family-operated business in Coral Springs.

“Theater people are resilient,” said Mary Damiano, the managing director of the awards. “We’ll survive.”

Damiano said moving the awards online felt like a jigsaw puzzle. The ceremony was originally planned for April. “We all decided by the end of the process that it is much easier to produce a live ceremony,” she said.
