Chaminade-Madonna bringing in Randall

- By Adam Lichtenstein

Chaminade-Madonna has hired one of Florida’s most successful coaches to take over its boys basketball program.

The Lions announced Wednesday that they hired Melvin Randall, the former coach at Blanche Ely, as the program’s new head coach.

Randall is one of Broward County’s most successful coaches in any sport, winning seven state titles at Ely and two at Deerfield Beach. Most recently, he won backto-back championships in 2018 and 2019.

He was named USA Today’s Boys Basketball Coach of the Year and the National High School Coaches Assocation

Coach of the Year in 2015. Randall has a career record of 591-184.

Most recently, he was the South Florida Sun Sentinel’s large schools coach of the year in 2019.

“It is not often that you get to bring in someone like Coach Randall to lead our boys’ basketball program,” athletic director Matt Bishop said in a press release. “His reputation for building a high-quality basketball program, and more importantly highcharacter young men, is unparalleled and we are lucky to have him.”

Randall replaces Andre Torres, ChaminadeMadonna’s former athletic director and boys basketball coach. Torres is now the athletic director at Cardinal Newman.

Torres coached the Lions from 2012 until this past season, going 128-76. Chaminade reached the Class 3A state semifinals last season before falling to eventual champion St. Andrew’s in Lakeland.

The Lions graduated six seniors from last year’s state semifinal team, including key scorers Johnny O’Neill, who signed with American University, and first-team all-county pick Andre Weir, who signed with Richmond.

Randall enjoyed success at Ely but ran into difficulties in 2019-20. The Tigers finished the year 11-13 and missed the postseason.
