Kids drivin’ you crazy? Head to the drive-in for ‘Sonic,’ ‘Selena’ and more
If you are not, at some point within the next few weeks, vacuuming popcorn from between your car seats, did summer even happen? South Florida’s ad-hoc drive-in movie theaters are selling entertainment, but also a few hours of normalcy. Here’s where to find it:
Wellington
The City of Wellington will unveil a venue for drive-in family fare on Friday, Aug. 7, with “The Addams Family,” followed on Saturday by ”Sonic the Hedgehog.” Most notably, the screenings are free.
The drive-in can be found at Wellington Green Park (2175 Wellington Green Drive). Movies begin at 8:30 p.m., with gates open at 7:15 p.m. Guests must reserve their space in advance and will be asked to show a QR confirmation code to enter the site. You are invited to bring your own concessions. To reserve a space or for more information, visit WellingtonFL.gov.
West Palm Beach
Beginning Saturday, the City of West Palm
Aug. 8, Beach’s
Show on the Go series will screen films through September at drive-in venues at Dreher Park and waterfront Currie Park. Cost: Only $10 per carload.
The screenings begin Aug. 8 with “Despicable Me 3” in Dreher Park (1301 Summit Blvd.), home to the Palm Beach Zoo. Also on the schedule: “Grease” Aug. 15 at Currie Park (2400 N. Flagler Drive), “Sonic the Hedgehog” Aug. 22 at Dreher Park and “50 First Dates” Aug. 29 at Currie Park. All films are at 7 p.m., with gates open at 6 p.m.
Tickets cost $10 (plus tax) per vehicle. VIP tickets are $30 per car and include a viewing spot in the first two rows, plus a family four-pack of popcorn, non-alcoholic beverages and candy. That’s pretty good math, too. For more information, visit WPB.org/events.
Fort Lauderdale
The FLIFF Drive-In Cinema series continues on Saturday, Aug. 8, with the ABBA homage “Mamma Mia!” Roll down your windows at your peril.
The screening takes place on the Intracoastal Waterway across 17th Street from Fort Lauderdale’s Pier 66 Resort & Marina.
Tickets cost $30 per vehicle, with gates open at 7 p.m. and the screening at 8:30 p.m. Concessions and food trucks will be available. For tickets and more information, visit FLIFF.com.
Hard Rock Stadium
At Hard Rock Stadium this weekend, there are no films scheduled for the on-field drivein, but screenings continue outside the stadium on the Fountain Plaza, with a schedule that includes “Ocean’s 8” on Friday, “Selena” on Saturday and “How to Train Your Dragon” on Sunday.
Reserved, socially distanced seating starts at $12 per person, with restaurant-style dining and concessions available for purchase. Luxury-box seating — a “living room” arrangement with a sofa, two loungers and two armchairs under a canopy, with waitstaff service — costs $28 per person. A dinner-and-a-movie feature in a separate space costs $49 per person, $20 for kids.
Fountain Plaza screenings continue through Aug. 23. For more information on the upcoming schedule and to purchase tickets, visit HardRockStadium.com/Theater.
