Team adds 6 to the COVID-19 reserve list

- By Omar Kelly

The Miami Dolphins’ COVID-19 reserve list continues to expand as the team takes the necessary precautions to avoid an outbreak like the one the Miami Marlins endured last month.

Newcomer Shaq Lawson, a free-agent defensive end added in the offseason, and five rookies — defensive tackles Raekwon Davis and Benito Jones, safety Brandon Jones, offensive guard Solomon Kindley and receiver Kirk Merritt — were added to the COVID-19 reserve list on Thursday.

A player added to the list doesn’t necessarily mean they have tested positive for the virus. It could simply mean those players have been in contact with someone — inside or outside the facility — that has tested positive and needs to have three days of negative tests before being able to rejoin the team.

This is Benito Jones’ second placed on the list, having been time being added and removed last week.

The Dolphins also removed rookie tailback Malcolm Perry and defensive tackle Zach Sieler from the list Thursday. Perry, who previously donated plasma because he possesses the antibodies needed to help those recover from COVID-19, was placed on the list earlier this week. But he quickly got removed from it after three days, which likely resulted in three negative tests.

Starting linebacker Jerome Baker, long snapper Blake Ferguson, Sieler and cornerback Cordrea Tankersley were previously placed on the list, but they have each been removed from it. Tankersley was released the same day he was removed from it.

Davon Godchaux was added to the list Wednesday, and if he’s indeed become infected by COVID-19 its possible that the five newcomers could have been in contact with the starting defensive lineman.

Ereck Flowers, an offensive guard Miami added in free agency, has been on the list since Sunday.
