Annual event switching gears, will do giveaways
The Sunshine Health Orange Bowl Family Fun and Fit Day is returning to South Florida in a different way this year, distributing food, sanitation items, personal protective equipment and back-to-school necessities to households preparing for the upcoming academic year amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
With the eighth annual free public event pivoting to a drive-thru system, items will be handed out at Orange Bowl Field at Carter Park, 1450 West Sunrise Blvd., in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday while supplies last.
Beginning at 9 a.m., families can drive up through the entrance on Ninth Street and 14th Terrace to receive the supplies from Orange Bowl Committee volunteers. The event ends at noon.
In addition to social-distancing guidelines being in place, individuals will also be asked to open their trunks so that supplies can be placed safely in their vehicles.
“We felt it extremely important to find a way to provide these services and supplies despite the challenges 2020 is presenting,” Orange Bowl Committee President and Chair Jeff E. Rubin said in a release. “We have adapted the event to ensure everyone’s safety while continuing to meet the needs of those in the community.
“We look forward to this annual event because of the opportunity to engage South Florida families and help children prepare for the upcoming school year.”
Families are required to provide the child’s ID to receive supplies and will be limited to only two backpacks.
