Herman gets FedEx Cup berth with victory

Jim Herman rallied to win the Wyndham Championsh­ip on Sunday in Greensboro, North Carolina for his third PGA Tour title and a spot in the FedEx Cup playoffs, shooting a 7under 63 for a one-stroke victory over Billy Horshel.

Herman overcame a four-stroke deficit in the final round at Sedgefield Country Club. He overtook Horschel with a birdie on the 71st hole.

The 42-year-old Herman finished at 21-under 259.

Horschel closed with a 65. He had a chance to tie on the 72nd hole, but his 8-foot birdie putt slid left of the cup.

Jerry Kelly seized control at the Senior Players Championsh­ip with a hole-in-one on the 12th hole at Firestone in Akron, Ohio, sending him to a final-round 1-under 69 and a two-shot victory for his first major on the PGA Tour Champions . ... Stacy Lewis won the Ladies Scottish Open with a 23-foot birdie putt on the first hole of a playoff, giving the 35-yearold American her first title in nearly three years. It was the 13th career LPGA Tour title for Lewis, who beat

Azahara Munoz, Cheyenne Knight and Emily Kristine Pedersen in the playoff.

College football: Ohio State QB Justin Fields started a petition requesting the Big Ten immediatel­y reinstate the 2020 football season. The campaign said it’s asking the Big Ten to allow its players and teams to make their own choices as to whether they wish to play or opt out of the fall season. Last week, the Big Ten postponed the fall season due to the coronaviru­s pandemic. Another Power Five conference, the Pac-12, quickly followed suit. Both conference­s are exploring the possibilit­y of a spring season.

NFL: Washington’s NFL team activated QB Alex Smith off the physically unable to perform list, the latest step in a remarkable recovery after his right leg was broken in two places during a game nearly two years ago. The move means that Smith now is allowed to participat­e in Washington’s padded practices when the team can move to that phase of training camp Tuesday. It could make for an interestin­g dynamic at QB, where Washington also has Dwayne Haskins, its 2019 first-round pick, and free-agent addition Kyle Allen. Smith, 36, is signed through 2022.

Tennis: Jennifer Brady overcame some shaky serving and used a five-game run to seize control for a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Jil Teichmann of Switzerlan­d in the final of the Top Seed Open in Lexington, Kentucky. It was the 25-year-old Brady’s first career WTA title. The Top Seed Open was the the first pro tennis event in the U.S. since the start of the coronaviru­s outbreak, and no spectators were allowed . ... Top-seeded Simona Halep of Romania beat third-seeded Elise Mertens of Belgium 6-2, 7-5 to win the Prague Open. It was Halep’s 21st career WTA title . ... Kei Nishikori, the 2014 U.S. Open men’s runner-up, tested positive for COVID-19 and said he will pull out of the tuneup tournament at Flushing Meadows that starts next week. The 30-year-old from Japan, who’s now based in Florida, didn’t say what his plans are for the Grand Slam tournament that begins Aug. 31.
