Eguavoen removed from COVID-19 reserve list

- By Omar Kelly

Miami Dolphins linebacker Sam Eguavoen (49) made 42 tackles and logged 3.5 sacks last season.

Sam Eguavoen’s stay on the Miami Dolphins’ COVID-19 reserve list lasted one day, and the versatile linebacker is allowed to return to practice.

The Dolphins placed Eguavoen on the team’s COVID-19 reserve list on Wednesday, but his quick removal indicates he either had a false positive test, or had exposure to someone who tested positive, but has produced to negative tests since.

The Dolphins have had nearly a dozen players go on and come off the COVID-19 reserve list. Cornerback Xavien Howard is the only player on the list as of Friday. Howard was put on last Tuesday and has been away from the team for 10 days and counting.

Eguavoen, who started six of the 16 games he played in and contributed 42 tackles and 3.5 sacks in 2019, should return to practice on Friday, and he’ll likely compete for the role Vince Biegel’s season-ending Achilles injury made vacant.

Eguavoen served as a pass-rushing linebacker late last season, once Biegel was sidelined by an injury, and he logged most of his 3.5 sacks during that stretch of games.

He’ll likely compete with Raekwon McMillan, Andrew Van Ginkel, Elandon Roberts, Kamu Grugier-Hill for a prominent role as the outside linebacker paired with

Kyle Van Noy and Jerome Baker in Miami’s threelinebacker sets.

The Dolphins have a roster spot available after placing Biegel on injured reserve, and Miami hosted pass rusher Nick Coe on Thursday.

Coe contributed 70 tackles and nine sacks and forced one fumble during his four-year career at Auburn. He signed with the Patriots as an undrafted free agent, but was released last Thursday.

Miami also brought in former Dolphins quarterback Jake Rudock for a visit. Rudock spent all of last season on Miami’s practice squad but got released when training camp opened up three weeks ago.
