Former Broward state attorney dies at 82

- By Austen Erblat

Phil Shailer, a former Broward County state attorney, public defender and Fort Lauderdale city attorney, has died, according to his family.

Shailer’s daughter Leslie Shailer Curley confirmed her father’s passing to the South Florida Sun Sentinel Sunday. He lived with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, commonly referred to as COPD, for years and died peacefully Saturday in his Hollywood home surrounded by family. He was 82.

“He knew how to be the father that each of us needed,” Shailer Curley said. “He wasn’t a static father with all of us. He knew we were all independent souls needing different things, kind of like in his professional life, it was the same kind of thing. He treated us with the respect and kindness and love and education that we needed from him.”

Over the course of his long career in public service, Shailer worked as an assistant public defender in Broward County, city attorney for Fort Lauderdale, Broward County State Attorney and served on an oversight committee at the State Attorney’s Office.
