Linebacker leaves practice with apparent sore shoulder

DAVIE — One of the Miami Dolphins’ key acquisitions this offseason injured himself during the team’s one-on-one drills and immediate left Monday’s practice, accompanied by a trainer.

Kyle Van Noy, a versatile linebacker the Dolphins signed to a four-year deal worth $51 million, apparently injured an area of his upper torso when he slipped while pass rushing against rookie right tackle Robert Hunt, who pancaked him into the turf.

Van Noy needed help getting off Miami’s practice field and immediately called for the team’s trainers. He walked off the field without any assistance, but seemed to be concerned about one of his shoulders.

His absence from Monday’s practice led to a few linebackers shuffling roles. Miami lost Vince Biegel to a seasonending Achilles injury last week, and Jerome Baker and James Crawford have both been nursing undisclosed injuries.

While Baker and Crawford returned to practice on Monday after missing a few sessions last week, the Dolphins seem to be relatively thin at linebacker because of the lingering injuries and Van Noy’s absence.

Van Noy, who contributed 56 tackles, 6.5 sacks and recovered two fumbles last season with the New England Patriots, was expected to be one of two everydown linebackers in Miami’s hybrid scheme.

Andrew Van Ginkel and Elandon Roberts played a more prominent role in his absence during Monday’s practice. Roberts has had his role elevated for a few days because of Baker’s absence.

Coincidentally or not, the South Florida Sun Sentinel learned that the Dolphins re-signed linebacker Trent Harris on Monday.

Harris, a former University of Miami player, happens to play Van Noy and Biegel’s position, which calls for a hybrid player working as half defensive end and half linebacker.

Harris started three of the 11 games he played for the Dolphins last season, contributing 22 tackles and 1.5 sacks and forcing one fumble. He was waived during the first week of training camp but hadn’t signed with another team.
