Florida records COVID-19 deaths of 183 more people
Florida on Tuesday reported the deaths of another 183 residents from COVID-19 complications, the highest daily total in a week.
It’s an increase from the 72 deaths reported Monday and the 51 deaths reported Sunday by the state Department of Health. But these pandemic tallies show people who have died from the disease in recent weeks — only 10 of the deaths happened in the past 24 hours.
Florida has had seven days in August with over 200 reported deaths in a day; the highest was 277 deaths on Aug. 11.
Overall the state has confirmed 10,717 fatalities linked to COVID-19, ranking it fifth in the U.S., behind New York, New Jersey, California and Texas. Florida is the third-most populous state, after California and Texas.
Florida’s COVID-19 death rate is the same as Georgia’s, at 16th in the nation, with 48 deaths per 100,000 people, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s COVID Data
Tracker.
Also Tuesday, Florida reported that its daily positivity rate, for new infections only, jumped to 7.5%, after it was near 5% for the past three days. This doesn’t count people who previously tested positive.
When you include retests of people who were previously diagnosed, the positivity rate sits at 11.34%, after four consecutive days where it was below 10%, the latest state results show.
Positivity is viewed as a key way to gauge the prevalence of the disease. Public health experts say the coronavirus is under control when the rate is 5% or below.
The recent figures mark an improvement over last month, when daily positivity for new infections was hovering around 15% across the state.
South Florida, which had the state’s biggest coronavirus outbreak, also has been experiencing some of its lowest positivity rates since early June.
The daily positivity rates reported on Tuesday were 5.66% for Broward County, an increase from the previous day’s 4.27%; 4.89% for Palm Beach County, down from 5.41% on Monday’s report; and 9.35% for MiamiDade, up from 9.13%.
Health officials on Tuesday reported test results for only 43,524 people, down from the nearly 98,600 test results reported three days earlier.
With the reduced testing, the state’s coronavirus cases continued a downward trend Tuesday, with 2,673 new cases. It’s the third day in a row with fewer than 3,000 new cases.
Florida has not had 10,000 or more COVID-19 cases per day for four weeks. The cases reported on a single day follow a lag between the collection of swabs over several days and the confirmation of positive results.
South Florida
South Florida, which accounts for 29% of Florida’s population, reported 1,081 new cases in the past day, or 40.4% of the daily total for the state.
Broward County: 201 new coronavirus cases were reported Tuesday, bringing the total to 69,584. The median age of Florida residents infected in the county is 39. A total of 1,173 people in Broward have died from the virus, 15 more than reported Monday. The total number includes 26 nonresident deaths.

Testing and positivity rate
More than 4.47 million people have been swabbed in Florida since the pandemic began, producing an overall positivity rate of 13.54%.
The state reports that 605,502 people have tested positive, and more than 3.86 million people have tested negative.

Hospitalizations
Across the state, 4,545 people were hospitalized with a primary diagnosis of COVID-19 as of 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, a decrease of 104 from about the same time a day earlier. The state’s online report updates several times throughout the day.
The number of people in hospitals for COVID-19 overall has been declining all month as has the number of people in intensive care units. The total number of people hospitalized for the disease two weeks ago was about 6,750. Four weeks ago, it was about 9,000.
Fewer people across the state are seeking care in emergency rooms for COVID-like symptoms.
For the week of July 12, there were 14,636 visits to hospital ERs for COVIDlike illness. That dropped to 4,095 visits for the week of Aug. 16, the latest data available.
South Florida: 1,658 people were hospitalized as of Tuesday afternoon. Broward County reported 584, Palm Beach County had 243, and Miami-Dade had 831, the most in the state.
These figures also represent declines. One week ago, Broward County hospitals had 695 patients with the virus, Palm Beach County had 360 and Miami-Dade had 1,090, according to the

Deaths
Statewide: The official COVID-19 report, updated Tuesday, shows 10,580 Florida resident deaths. Another 137 non-residents also died in Florida. The state reports that 1.76% of resident cases have resulted in death.
COVID-19 is the state’s deadliest infectious disease. Throughout 2019, there were 2,703 deaths attributed to the flu and pneumonia in Florida, records show.
Seniors: At least 4,470 deaths have occurred among residents and staff of nursing homes and longterm care facilities, a figure that represents 42.2% of the state total for coronavirus deaths of residents.
Miami-Dade County has the highest number of deaths at the facilities, with 678, or 15.2% of the total. Palm Beach County has had 450 deaths, or 10%, and Broward accounted for 346 deaths, or 7.7%.
Global view
Worldwide: The novel coronavirus has infected more than 23.7 million people and killed at least 814,852 worldwide as of 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to Johns Hopkins University’s Coronavirus Resource Center.
U.S.: The United States has 5.75 million cases, the highest total in the world, with at least 177,619 deaths, the most fatalities of any country. The U.S. has 4.3% of the world’s population, but 24.3% of the world’s cases and 21.8% of the world’s deaths.
The CDC says the actual number of people infected by the virus is perhaps 10 times higher in the U.S., because of testing limitations and mild cases that have been unreported.
