Florida State redshirt junior James Blackman will open the 2020 season as the Seminoles’ starting quarterback.

New coach Mike Norvell announced the decision following practice Tuesday.

“I think Jameshas had an extraordinary camp,” Norvell said. “I’m pleased with the growth and development I’ve seen from him in all aspects. I believe he’s got all the skills and traits of what’s necessary to be a successful quarterback.”

Blackman beat sophomore Jordan Travis and true freshman Tate Rodemaker and Chubba Purdy for the chance to lead the team during the 2020 season.

“Honestly, I justcameout and focused on being better each and every single day,” Blackman said of earning the opportunity to start. “That’s just the big thing with me, just making sure I come out and grow with each situation daily, every second, every minute just trying to get better.

“I really wasn’t focused on all that. [I] just put the work in, did what I had to do to execute and I felt like I would be in a good position.”

This is the fourth different offensive system for Blackman, who has appeared in 27 games during three seasons at FSU. He’s thrown for 5,079 yards, 41 touchdowns and 23 interceptions.

has done an extraordinary job and I’m really proud of the young man and all the things he’s done to earn the shot.”

New offensive coordinatorKenny Dillingham said it was Blackman’s poise and consistency that helpedhim secure the starting job.

“At that position, consistency is a mark of a champion,” said Dillingham, who worked at Auburn last season. “He’s shown that throughout camp and he’s shown a work ethic and an intensity in every single rep whether an individual or team drill.”

Norvell said he’s excited about the competition at the quarterback position even with Blackman earning the starting nod.

“These guys are very talented and I would not be shocked to see other guys at that position get opportunities to help impact this football team,” said Norvell, who arrived in Tallahassee after spending four seasons atMemphis.

Traviswas thrust into the

lineup last season when the Seminoles needed a boost in the ground game, finishing third on the team in rushing with 228 yards. Rodemaker and Purdy were part of FSU’s 2020 recruiting class.
