■ Blue Jays, Yankees: Gary Sanchez and the slumpingYa­nkees lost their fifth in a rowand fell for the 15th time in 20 games, again failing to get clutch hits in a 2-1 loss to the Blue Jays on Tuesday in Buffalo, New York. At 21-21, the Yankees are at .500 or worse in September for the first time since 1995. Jonathan Davis homered in his first at-bat of the season and the Jays won their third straight game. Shun Yamaguchi (2-3) allowed one run in two innings of relief to earn the win. A.J. ColeandAnt­honyKay each pitched one scoreless inning, and Rafael Dolis finished for his third save in as many opportunit­ies. After stranding seven runners through the first four innings, New York got on the board when Luke Voit singled and scored on Mike Tauchman’s sacrifice fly in the fifth.

■ Cardinals, Twins: Matt Wieters hit 14 foul balls during a 19-pitch at-bat that finished with a flyout during a five-run third that sent the Cardinals over the visiting Twins 6-4 for a doublehead­er split. Josh Donaldson, Nelson Cruz and Miguel Sano all homered, leading theTwins to a 7-3 victory over the Cardinals in the first seveninnin­g game. Cruz also homered in the second game to tie him for the MLB lead with 15. ... ... Behind second base at Busch Stadium, a large No. 20was placed touching the grass to honor Hall of Famer Lou Brock, who diedSunday at the age of 81.

■ Royals: Maikel Franco drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth and had an RBI single in the ninth as the Royals beat the host Indians 8-6 to snap a sevengame losing streak. Whit Merrifield hit a three-run HRandCamGa­llagher had an RBI double for the Royals. Greg Holland (3-0) worked two perfect innings, striking out three, for the victory. Scott Barlow allowed one run in the ninth before earning his second save.

■ Padres: 1B Eric Hosmer could be out two to six weeks after breaking his left index finger while attempting to bunt against the Rockies on Monday, Padres manager Jayce Tingler announced. Hosmer is hitting .291 with eight HRs and 32 RBIs, and he was part of the Padres’ “Slam Diego” outburst in midAugust, when they became the first team in MLB history to hit four grand slams in four straight games.

■ Extra innings: Khris Davis homered and hit an RBI double against previously unbeaten Zack Greinke, and the AL Westleadin­g A’s beat the visiting Astros 4-2 in the first game of a doublehead­er. Greinke (3-1) allowed four runs and seven hits over six innings. He struck out six. ... The Brewers released 1B Justin Smoak after designatin­g him for assignment last week. Smoak hit .186 with five HRs and 15 RBIs in 33 games for the Brewers, who claimed 1B Daniel Vogelbach off waivers last week. ... Red Sox OF Andrew Benintendi will not return this season. Benintendi, who was placed on the 10-day IL on Aug. 12 because of a strained right rib cage, was put on the 45-day IL. He hit just a .103 with no HRs and one RBI.
