Florida reports 2,725 cases

Department of Health records 119 deaths Tuesday

Florida’ s Department of Health on Tuesday reported 2,725 new cases of COVID-19 and 119 additional deaths.

The state reported a total of 738,749 positive cases as of Tuesday. In total, there have been 15,531 Florida resident deaths from the virus and 191 non-resident deaths.

Overall, health officials reported that 5.6 million people in Florida have been tested for the virus since the pandemic began. About 4.8 million have tested negative. The cumulative positivity rate in that time is 13.2%, state data shows.

Thestate reported a daily positivity rate for Monday of 4.99%, which is slightly higher than the most recent seven-day average of 4.76% and right at the 5% threshold that public officials have said they would like to stay below.

Other tallies show a higher positivity rate depending on the source and method. For example, Johns Hopkins University, which doesn’t exclude repeated results for the same individual, reported Florida’s positivity rate tobe9.2% based on Monday’s test results.

The Department of Health said Tuesday’s numbers reflect the results of 58,779 tests.

South Florida

Broward County: 177 additional confirmed coronaviru­s cases and 12 new deaths. The county has a known total of 79,611 cases and 1,508 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic. In total, 5,546 residents were tested on Monday, leading to a positivity rate of 3.24%.

Palm Beach County: 172 additional cases of COVID-19 and 12 new deaths. The county nowhas 48,176 confirmed cases and 1,483 deaths. In total, 3,160 people were tested, leading to a positivity rate of4.16%, whichis the highest rate since Sept. 30.

Miami-Dade County: 440 additional confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 20 new deaths. The county now has 175,837 confirmed cases and 3,486 deaths. Over 10,000 people were tested, leading to a positivity rate of 4.51%.

Hospitaliz­ations and deaths

Asof 1p.m. Tuesday, 2,133 people across the state were hospitaliz­ed with a primary diagnosis of COVID-19, down from 2,203 at the same time on Monday.

Broward County reported 175 patients hospitaliz­ed; Palm Beach County had 115 and Miami-Dade had the most in the state with 260 people hospitaliz­ed. The online report from the state Agency for Health Care Administra­tion updates several times throughout the day. Hospitaliz­ations hit a peak in late July of about 9,500 patients.

Since the pandemic began, a total of 46,225 residents have been hospitaliz­ed for the disease in

Florida, according to a separate report by the state health department.

Deaths: Monday’s report shows a total of 15,531 Florida resident deaths. In addition, 191 non-resident deaths have been attributed to the virus in the state. Florida’s COVID-19 death rate is ninth among states with 72 deaths per 100,000 people, according to the CDC. That’s higher than the national rate of 65 deaths per 100,000.

Long-term care facilities: At least 6,305 deaths have occurred among residents and staff at nursing homes and assisted-living centers throughout Florida. That’s 46 additional deaths from Monday’s report.

Miami-Dade County has had the highest number of deaths at long-term care facilities, with 827 and Palm Beach County was second with 658. Broward has had 428 deaths.

National and global view

U.S.: At least 7.82 million people in the country have been infected with the novel coronaviru­s and 215,355 are known to have died as of 1 p.m. on Tuesday, according to Johns Hopkins University’s Coronaviru­s Resource Center.

World: At least 37.95 million people have tested positive for COVID-19 and 1,082,928 people have died from the disease, according to Johns Hopkins. The U.S. has had the most COVID19 cases and deaths of any country. The U.S. has4.3% of the world’s population, but 20% of theworld’s cases and 20% of theworld’s deaths.
