Florida reports 3,449 new virus cases

98 more residents have died from virus

Florida on Friday reported 3,449 new cases of COVID-19 and 98 additional deaths. The latest caseload figure is slightly higher than Thursday’s total and marks a continued rise in new cases since the beginning of this week.

Florida ranks 33rd among all states for new cases per 100,000 people over the last week, according to the CDC. Florida’s rate is 12.4 cases per 100,000. North Dakota leads the country with 84 cases per 100,000.

The Department of Health reported a total of 748,437 positive cases as of Thursday. In total, there have been 15,830 Florida resident deaths from the virus and 200 non-resident deaths.

Overall, health officials reported that 5.66 million people in Florida have been tested for the virus since the pandemic began. About 4.91 million have tested negative.

The cumulative positivity rate in that time is 13.17%, state data shows.

The Department of Health said Friday’s numbers reflect the results of 84,507 tests administer­ed on Thursday.

Daily positivity rate

According to two different measures of daily positivity rates, the state is trending slightly downward from Thursday’s numbers.

Florida Department of Health: On Friday, the state also reported a 4.38% positivity rate under Florida’s way of calculatin­g positivity. Friday’s rate is lower than the previous two days, when it inched over the 5% mark.

Johns Hopkins University: Unlike state data, Johns Hopkins University doesn’t exclude repeated results for the same individual. On Friday John Hopkins reported Florida’s positivity rate to be 11.9% based on Thursday’s test results, which is lower than the 13.2% reported on Thursday.

South Florida

Broward County: 331 additional confirmed coronaviru­s cases and nine new deaths. The county has a known total of 80,443 cases and 1,529 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic. In total, 8,529 residents were tested on Thursday, leading to a positivity rate of 3.96%.

Palm Beach County: 178 additional cases of COVID-19 and six new deaths. The county now has 48,674 confirmed cases and 1,501 deaths. In total, 4,850 people were tested, leading to a positivity rate of 3.37%.

Miami-Dade County: 530 additional confirmed cases of COVID19 and 19 new deaths. The county now has 177,339 confirmed cases and 3,541 deaths. In total, 12,456 people were tested, leading to a positivity rate of 4.11%.

Hospitaliz­ations

As of noon Friday, 2,100 people across the state were hospitaliz­ed

with a primary diagnosis of COVID-19, slightly lower than the 2,117 hospitaliz­ed at the same time on Thursday.

Broward County reported 177 patients hospitaliz­ed; Palm Beach County had 99 and Miami-Dade had the most in the state with 269 people hospitaliz­ed.

The online report from the state Agency for Health Care Administra­tion updates several times throughout the day.

Hospitaliz­ations hit a peak in late July of about 9,500 patients.

Since the pandemic began, a total of 46,862 residents have been hospitaliz­ed for the disease in Florida, according to a separate report by the state health department.

Deaths

Statewide: Friday’s report shows a total of 15,830 Florida resident deaths. In addition, 200 non-resident deaths have been attributed to the virus in the state.

Florida’s COVID-19 death rate since the pandemic began is tenth among states with 73 deaths per 100,000 people, according to the CDC. That’s higher than the national rate of 65 deaths per 100,000.

Over the last seven days, however, the state has averaged 0.5 deaths per 100,000 people, according to the CDC.

Long-term care facilities: At least 6,416 deaths have occurred among residents and staff at nursing homes and assisted-living centers throughout Florida. That’s 30 additional deaths from Thursday’s report.

Miami-Dade County has had the highest number of deaths at long-term care facilities, with 830 and Palm Beach County was second with 667. Broward has had 434 deaths.

National and global view

U.S.: At least 7.98 million people in the country have been infected with the novel coronaviru­s and 217,798 have died as of noon Friday, according to Johns Hopkins University’s Coronaviru­s Resource Center.

World: At least 39 million people have tested positive for COVID-19 and 1,099,727 people have died from the disease, according to Johns Hopkins. The U.S. has had the most COVID19 cases and deaths of any country. The U.S. has 4.3% of the world’s population, but 20% of the world’s cases and 20% of the world’s deaths.
