Dolphins attack Gase with tight ends
It’s poetic justice that the Dolphins threw two touchdown passes to tight ends on Sunday, beating Adam Gase’s team with the position he struggled to utilize during his three-year tenure in Miami. And to pour salt in the wound, Durham Smythe, one of the two tight ends the Dolphins selected in the 2018 NFL draft, caught his first career touchdown against Gase’s Jets team. Adam Shaheen also caught his second touchdown pass in two weeks.
The last time this happened, the Dolphinswon theAFC
The Dolphins had not shut out Gang Green in 37 years, since Jan. 30, 1983, when A.J. Du he intercepted three Richard Todd passes ina 14-0 white washin the AFC Championship gameto get the Dolphins to the Super Bowl against Washington in Pasadena, Calif., where they lost, 27-17. The next 74 matchups, across 37 years, went without a Dolphins shutoutof theJets. Themostrecent regular-season blanking by the Dolphins in the series came in September of 1976.

Gaskin runs a motivated man
Myles Gaskin will probably try to downplayMiami’s courtship of Le’Veon Bell, saying it didn’t motivate his performance on Sunday. But it’s easy to connect the dots with Gaskin’s 126 all-purpose yards and the Dolphins’ pursuit of the tailback the Jets released whoended up signing with the Kansas City Chiefs. Eitherway, Gaskin’s 91 rushing yards on 18 carries and the four passes he caught, which turned into 35 yards showed he has what it takes tobe viewed as a legitimate NFL starter.
Dolphins own a firstrounder from a team with the second-worst record in theNFL
On the heels of their coach being fired, the Texans rallied but then blew a late lead and lost to the Tennessee Titans in overtime Sunday to fall to 1-5. Further, therewas a report that the franchise might unload veteran contributors to go into a rebuild and grab draft picks. All greatnewsfor the Dolphins who ownHouston’s draft pick, the seventh pick according to tankathon.com as of the end of Sunday’s 1 p.m. games. Further, with the Giants and Falcons winning, there is nowonly one team— the Jets— with aworse record than the Texans. OK, they are tied with five other teams for that distinction.
Firing Gase nowwould be wrong approach for Jets
It is obvious that the Jets struggles in their second season under Adam Gase will likely cost the former Dolphins head coach his job. But the Jets wouldbefoolish to pull the plug onGasenow, or atanypoint this year considering their franchise could possibly benefit fromthis year’s struggles if it lands them the No. 1 pick, which could be used to draft Clemson start quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Firing Gase and naming Gregg Williams the interim coach could produce too many wins. The Jets would be wise to bottom out in 2020 and lose more games than every other team.
