GOLF TimberTech Championship on the tee

- — Brett Shweky

Where: The Old Course at Broken Sounds, Boca Raton

When: Friday-Sunday

TV: Golf Channel

Notable: Most recently referred to as the Oasis Championship, the newly named TimberTech Championship has also been called the Boca Raton Championship and Allianz Championship. It’s usually in February or March, but it was postponed by the COVID-19 pandemic this year. Looking to cement himself in tournament history, Palm Beach County resident Bernhard Langer returns to the PGA Tour Champions event with the hopes of raising his third championship. Becoming the first player to win the tournament twice (2019, 2010), Langer finished last year with an event-record score of 19-under 197, beating Marco Dawson by an impressive five shots. The World Golf Hall of Famer claimed his 41st career PGA Tour title at the Cologuard Classic in March, leaving him just four victories behind Hale Irwin’s record for most wins on the PGA Tour Champions. Fellow Tour rookies Ernie Els (Jupiter resident) and Jim Furyk will also highlight this year’s field, combining for three wins in only 14 starts on the 50-and-older circuit. Some of the other local favorites set to compete for the $2 million purse include Jupiter resident Mark Calcavecchia as well as Delray Beach’s Jeff Sluman. In September, AZEK’s brand TimberTech signed on as the title sponsor for the tournament, keeping the event at The Old Course at Broken Sounds for the 14th consecutive year. Due to the cancellation of eight of the original 27 tournaments, the Tour has decided to increase the field size of the event from 78 to 81.

Tickets: Not open to the public due to COVID-19
