Palm Beach school ends regular slate

- By Steve Svekis

The remainder of Palm Beach Central’s football regular season has been canceled “due to COVID,” the School District of Palm Beach County announced Friday.

This is the first of the county’s public schools to end the season early because of the virus, though several games involving other schools have been canceled or postponed during the already-abbreviated season. Each team was scheduled to play a fourgame regular season before tri-county playoffs began. Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade county public schools did not begin the season in time to qualify for the Florida High School Athletic Association playoffs.

Broncos football coach Scottie Littles said: “I can’t tell you much. I’m very disappointed for my seniors, and for all my players.

“This is not a Palm Beach Central decision. This is an upper-district leadership decision.”

The press release from the school district said “This includes games until November 29,” seeming to leaving open the possibility for a postseason. With only one game, a 41-0 loss to Glades Central on Halloween, under their belts, it’s hard to see how the Broncos could qualify, though.

As of 5 p.m. on Friday, the school district dashboard showed that the Wellington school has 19 student infections and five among employees.

The school district also announced the cancellation of Saturday’s scheduled game between West Boca and Olympic Heights, and that the Forest HillPark Vista game would be played at 2:30 p.m. at Wellington High School.
