Two bodies — husband and wife — were discovered Saturday morning in the water, near a boat, at the southern end of the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge in Palm Beach County.

Authorities identified the couple as Archer James Adams III and Paula Adams, both 76, of Boca Raton.

“The cause of death is currently unknown,” said Susan Neel, communications director for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

A woman who answered the door Sunday at the couple’s one-story home in the 1000 block of NW5th Avenue was too distraught to comment. Property records show the Adams’ bought the home in

1995.

Jorge Alvarez, who lives across the street from the Adams’ residence, said the couple, who had an adult daughter, were friendly and were often seen together in the neighborhood with their dog. Alvarez, 52, said the couple had been retired for about 20 years.

Another neighbor, who did not wish to be identified by name, said the couple owned a small boat. It was not known Sunday if that boat was the one found at the refuge.

Officials with Florida Fish and Wildlife are handling the investigation, Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Teri Barbera said Sunday. Deputies from Palm Beach and Broward counties are also assisting.

“The FWC... will provide additional details as they become available,” Neel said in an email. “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Adams during this difficult time.”

No other details were immediately available.
