Cardinal Gibbons leader DuBuc named Class 4A Coach of the Year
After leading Cardinal Gibbons to its second state title in three years, coach Matt DuBuc earned statewide recognition.
The Chiefs coach was named the Class 4A Coach of the Year by Florida Dairy Farmers on Wednesday, finishing first in the voting. He was the lone award winner from Broward or Palm Beach counties.
DuBuc and the Chiefs went 8- 1 this season; their only loss came against eventual Class 5A state champion American Heritage. During the regular season, Cardinal Gibbons went 3- 1, including a win over eventual Class 7A state champion St. Thomas Aquinas.
In the postseason, the Chiefs dominated most opponents, winning their five playoff games by an average of 21.6 points. Cardinal Gibbons beat Jacksonville Bolles 35- 21 in the state championship game to end the year.
Other players and coaches were nominated for the awards and finished among the top nominees in their classes.
In Class 7A, St. Thomas Aquinas
defensive lineman Dallas Turner finished third in the voting for player of the year, and coach Roger Harriott finished second in the voting for coach of the year.
In Class 6A, Dillard coach Tyler Tate finished fifth in the voting for coach of the year.
In Class 5A, American Heritage
safety James Williams finished third in the voting for player of the year, and coach Patrick Surtain finished second in the voting for coach of the year.
In Class 3A, Chaminade- Madonna coach Dameon Jones finished third in the voting for coach of the year.
