Kim secures 3rd PGA Tour title

Si Woo Kim birdied two of the final three holes to finish a rock-solid, 8-under 64, coolly rallying past late-charging Patrick Cantlay by one shot to win The American Express on Sunday in La Quinta, California.

It was the 25-year-old South Korean’s third PGA Tour victory and first since the 2017 Players Championsh­ip.

Cantlay shot a 61 and surged out of 13th, breaking the Stadium Course record by two strokes.

„ Tyrrell Hatton shot a final-round 6-under 66 to win the European Tour’s season-opening Abu Dhabi Championsh­ip by four strokes after overnight leader Rory McIlroy faded with a 72 to drop into third. It was Hatton’s sixth career victory. Australia’s Jason Scrivener (66) finished second . ... Jessica Korda shot a final-round 5-under 66 and holed a 30-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to beat overnight leader Danielle Kang (68) at the LPGA Tour’s season-opening Tournament of Champions in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. It was the sixth career victory for Korda and first in nearly three years.

NBA: Kawhi Leonard scored 34 points and the visiting Clippers beat the Thunder 108-101 for their seventh consecutiv­e victory. Serge Ibaka added 17 points. At 13-4, the Clippers are tied with the Lakers for the best record in the NBA. Leonard’s total was one off his season high to go with nine rebounds and eight assists . ... Donovan Mitchell had 23 points, seven rebounds and six assists as the Jazz routed the visiting Warriors 127-108 on Saturday night for their eighth straight victory. Stephen Curry made five 3s for the Warriors to give him 2,562 in his career — passing Reggie Miller for second place in NBA history. Ray Allen is first with 2,973.

NFL: Three-time Pro Bowl TE Greg Olsen, 35, announced that he plans to retire after 14 seasons and join Fox Sports’ NFL coverage. Olsen spent the season with the Seahawks after nine seasons with the Panthers.

NHL: Linus Ullmark stopped 28 shots in regulation and OT and three more in the shootout to help the Sabres beat the host Capitals 4-3 for just their second victory in six games this season . ... Pius Suter scored his first three career goals, Kevin Lankinen made 25 saves and the Blackhawks beat the visiting Red Wings 6-2.

Soccer: Four players and the president of Brazilian club Palmas died in a plane crash in the northern state of Tocantins. The accident occurred when the plane suddenly plunged to the ground at the end of the runway while on takeoff. The players were on their way to Goiania, in the central region of the country, to play a match against Vila Nova. The victims were identified as president Lucas Meira and players Lucas Praxedes, Guilherme Noé, Ranule and Marcus Molinari, as well as the pilot. There were no survivors. Palmas Futebol e Regatas was founded in 1997 and plays in Brazil’s fourth division. The cause of the accident wasn’t immediatel­y known.

Tennis: The WTA announced a new tournament in Melbourne for players undergoing a 14-day quarantine without an opportunit­y to practice ahead of the Australian Open beginning Feb. 8. The new tournament will be staged from Feb. 3-7 and will cater for players who haven’t been able to train. A total of 72 players remain in hard lockdown after three chartered flights to the Australian Open returned positive COVID-19 cases. Two ATP men’s tournament­s will be pushed back 24 hours to start on Feb. 1 and the ATP Cup will get underway a day later.
