Woman injured in shooting at strip club

- By Susannah Bryan

The pop of gunfire erupted outside a Lauderhill strip club at around 4 a.m. Sunday, leaving one woman seriously injured in a crime scene that spanned from the nightclub to an emergency room 5 miles away, police say.

The woman was shot at the Vegas Cabaret, a strip club at 5428 North University Drive in Lauderhill, and she was taken by car to Florida Medical Center in Lauderdale Lakes. The victim was listed in serious condition Sunday, and police have not said whether she works at the club or was a patron.

The shooting at the strip club triggered a chain of events that led to a deputy-involved shooting outside the Florida Medical Center.

A Lauderhill police officer was hit by a car during a foot chase with a man who jumped out of a yellow Dodge Challenger that brought the wounded woman to the hospital, Santiago said. It was not clear whether that man was the driver or a passenger, he said.

As police and Broward Sheriff ’s deputies chased him down on foot, the man ran toward an orange-red Chevy Camaro, but was caught and arrested before he could get to the vehicle, Santiago said.

The driver of the Camaro then veered toward police. One deputy fired at the car in an attempt to keep the driver from hitting anyone, said Carey Codd, a spokesman for the Sheriff ’s Office.

The driver was able to get away, and authorities do not know whether he was injured, Codd said. Police are on the lookout for the Camaro. The car has a temporary tag with “C” as the first letter.

The Lauderhill officer hit by the Camaro has minor injuries and is expected to recover, Santiago said. The Sheriff ’s Office did not say how many shots were fired and did not release the name of the deputy involved.

The woman who was shot was transferred to Broward Heath Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale in serious condition, Santiago said.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477) or leave tips online at crimestoppers.org.
