Events commemorat­e MSD shooting

Events and activities this year have been reduced to adhere to COVID-19 protocols. Following is a list of what’s planned, in-person and virtual, for the third anniversar­y honoring the 17 victims of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas mass shooting. Also listed are continuing support activities for the survivors and those affected by the tragedy.

Service and Love, Feb. 8-12, Broward County Public Schools and their communitie­s will observe the three-year commemorat­ion of the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. For more informatio­n visit, browardsch­ools. com/serviceand­love.

Mindfulnes­s Experience, 1:15-2:15 p.m. Feb. 11. Join virtually on Microsoft Teams for mind-body medicine techniques to reduce stress and build resilience. Presented by AmeriCorps Recovery Ambassador­s to address the urgent need for a communityw­ide stress and trauma-relief response. Day of Service and Love, 7:40-11 a.m. Feb. 12. Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School will honor the memory of the 17 lives lost and those who were injured on Feb. 14, 2018, by engaging in a nonacademi­c service project on campus while adhering to CDC pandemic guidelines. See FAQs at bit.ly/2NY7E0s.

Spreading the Love, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Feb. 14. The Wellness Center will offer a safe space with a full day of programmin­g. Community Commemorat­ion, 5:30 p.m. Feb. 14. Attend in-person at Pine Trails Park, 10559 Trails Ends, Parkland. Virtual attendees are invited to visit the city’s Facebook, Twitter and YouTube live feeds. Commemorat­ion will be conducted by spiritual leaders, followed by a short video and candle lighting. City of Margate MSD Vigil, 5:30 p.m. Feb. 14. To honor the 17 lives lost, 17 lanterns will be released at 6:17 p.m., following a short speech and song. Hosted by the Margate Police Dept. City of Pembroke Pines Prayer Vigil, 6 p.m. Feb. 14. The community is invited to join the city in honoring the lives of the students and staff who lost their lives, and acknowledg­e the recovery and strength of the students, staff and families who survived. Virtual Fundraiser: This is a community service project by the City of Parkland that has partnered with the Coconut Creek-based nonprofit Food For The Poor. This year, due to COVID-19, residents are asked to honor the 17 lives lost by donating online to this effort to change lives for the better.
