American plans to cut 13,000 workers

Move would likely affect more than 1,000 jobs at Miami International Airport

- By David Lyons

American Airlines expects to furlough and lay off 1,068 employees at Miami International Airport in April after federal aid to the industry expires March 31, according to a filing with the state of Florida made public Tuesday.

The furloughs are part of a wider systemwide move to potentially cut 13,000 employees from the workforce as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to hound the nation’s airline industry by keeping wary travelers off commercial airliners.

American’s filing made no mention of its employees at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Palm Beach International Airport.

The filing with the state Department of Economic Opportunity said that 1,023 people in Miami will be furloughed starting April 10 and that the action will be temporary.

“It is our sincere hope that this number decreases based on factors such as additional voluntary leaves of absence and voluntary early outs, or changes in the demand environment,” the airline said.

Forty-five other workers will be permanently laid off starting April 1.

Last week, American’s top executives told employees in a memo that thousands were likely to lose their jobs when federal aid ends at the end of March as passenger traffic, suppressed by the coronavirus since last year, has failed to rise to the levels necessary to justify retaining a pre-pandemic workforce.

Although the Florida notice did not specify what types of workers would be cut, the executives’ memo said the action is across the board, affecting flight crews and ground workers.

“The vaccine is not being distributed as quickly as any of us believed, and new restrictions on international travel that require customers to have a negative COVID-19 test have dampened demand,” American CEO Doug Parker and President Robert Isom wrote in their joint staff memo.

The two American executives said they would fight for an extension of federal aid to the industry.

At the time of that announcement, the airline did not break down the prospective layoffs by market and had no information to disclose on Florida.

Two weeks ago, United Airlines informed its employees that it would drop 14,000 employees.

Last December, Southwest Airlines, which serves Fort Lauderdale, Orlando and Tampa, warned employees it could lay off up to 800 workers in those three cities by mid-March if its labor unions do not offer “more reasonable” terms in labor negotiations.

The airline recently introduced service to Miami International Airport.

South Florida seniors eager to get COVID-19 vaccines are beginning to have success, but it takes determination, patience and a little luck to land coveted appointments. Each week, the state receives new doses from the federal government, and as they arrive, more locations are being added.
