No foolin’: Temperatures will drop to low 60s this week
Get ready, South Florida. Mother Nature won’t be joking around this April Fools’ Day, Thursday, April 1, when temperatures are forecast to bottom out in the low 60s.
An early spring cold front, coming to South Florida Wednesday, will bring a brisk morning chill through at least Friday, forecasters said.
At this time of year, Broward and Palm Beach counties normally see highs in the 80s and morning temperatures in the low 70s. Due to the cold front, morning temperatures are forecast to be roughly 10 degrees cooler, around 63.
Daytime highs are only expected to reach the lower 70s along the coast. Inland highs could climb to the midto upper 70s.
“It’s not uncommon that we can get a late-season cold front,” National Weather Service forecaster Heather Nepaul said. “But they’re definitely becoming less and less common as the months wear on into the year.”
Nepaul said there’s a chance the cold front may raise the potential for a small craft advisory and a rip current advisory through the weekend, as winds are expected to stay at an
increased level — between 15 and 20 mph — through the weekend.
Rain chances will increase as the front passes Thursday, the Opening Day for the
Marlins. But the rain won’t come anywhere close to the torrential downpours South Florida has seen in recent days and weeks.
“Right now, we’re not
looking for anything too severe,” Nepaul said, “probably just a couple of isolated thunderstorms through the day Thursday as the front pushes through and then
clearing out Friday for the weekend.”
Effects from the cold front aren’t expected to linger for long. Temperatures are expected to begin bouncing back to seasonal levels early next week with lows in the upper 60s and highs in the upper 70s. By midweek, highs will likely be back to the 80s.
