Brooks enters transfer portal

- By David Furones

Miami Hurricanes redshirt senior center Nysier Brooks has entered the NCAA transfer portal, a UM spokesperson confirmed to the South Florida Sun Sentinel on Monday night.

Brooks averaged 7.4 points, 5.8 rebounds, and about a block per outing as one of two Miami players to play all 27 games in the 2020-21 season. He originally transferred to UM from Cincinnati and sat out the previous season due to prior transfer rules, which will not be in effect when he makes this transition.

News of Brooks entering the portal was first reported by ESPN.

Brooks joins guards Chris Lykes, Earl Timberlake and Elijah Olaniyi as UM basketball players opting to transfer thus far this offseason after Miami finished 10-17 in a season that started filled with promise but was derailed by a number of injuries.

The Hurricanes and freshman forward Matt Cross also parted ways midseason, and he has since decided to join Louisville.

It’s a prevalent trend all throughout college basketball this offseason with more than 1,000 players currently in the transfer portal, the NCAA database that keeps the names of players seeking a transfer.

Hurricanes redshirt senior forward Sam Waardenburg has committed to returning to UM next season. Coach Jim Larrañaga has also expressed confidence that underclassmen Harlond Beverly and Anthony Walker will return.

Guards Isaiah Wong and Kameron McGusty are prime among others yet to make a decision on their future with Miami.
