Carlsson, Wallmark acquired from Hawks

- By Kathy Laughlin

The Panthers picked up defenseman Lucas Carlsson and forward Lucas Wallmark in a trade with the Blackhawks on Thursday, sending forward Brett Connolly, defenseman Riley Stillman, the restricted free agent rights to forward Henrik Borgstrom and a 2021 seventhround draft pick to Chicago.

It is the Panthers second trade in a week with the Blackhawks. The traded left winger Vinnie Hinostroza to Chicago for prospect Brad Morrison Friday.

Both trades should help free up some salary-cap space for the Panthers. The NHL trade deadline is Monday.

Carlsson, a 6-foot, 189-pound native of Gävle, Sweden, played the last of his 12 games for the Blackhawks on March 9 in Dallas, where he recorded his only point, an assist. Otherwise, he bounced between the taxi squad and the minor-league Rockford IceHogs team.

Wallmark is on his second stint with Florida. He played in seven games for the Panthers during the 2019-20 season, registering two points (1-1-2). He was traded in February 2020 as part of a package that sent Vincent Trocheck to the Carolina Hurricanes.

Wallmark last played for Chicago on March 18 in Tampa Bay and had three assists in 16 games this season.

As for the departing Panthers, Connolly, 28, brings with him his $3.5 million cap hit (through 202223). He was the sixth overall draft pick in 2010, and in his 21 games this season he has 2 goals and 2 assists for 4 points. In his 517 career games, he has 100 goals and 92 assists.

Borgstrom, who was the No. 23 draft pick in 2016, has 11 goals and eight assists in 27 games for HIFK in the Finnish Elite League. He played parts of three seasons for the Panthers, including 50 games in 2018-19, when he scored eight goals.
