Get ready for a scorcher this weekend

- By Chris Perkins

Don’t be surprised if it gets hotter this weekend in South Florida than it’s ever been in mid-April.

Ahead of a scorching weekend that could make the record books, Thursday’s highs are expected to be in the mid 80s, with a bigger warmup Friday as highs reach the upper 80s, forecasters said.

“We very well could hit a couple of records this weekend,” National Weather Service meteorologist Sammy Hadi said, adding that it’ll be very dry and hot.

At least it won’t be humid over the weekend, Hadi said. Humidity ranges should stay between 40 and 50%.

And the heatwave shouldn’t stick around long.

High temperatures Saturday could reach the mid-90s in Broward and Palm Beach counties, and things will stay hot Sunday with temperatures expected in the low 90s.

If all goes as predicted, South Florida will be at or near record

high temperatures.

You don’t have to look far to find the last time it was this hot at this time of year — because it happened in 2020.

West Palm Beach had record-breaking heat on April 14 and 15 of last year, with high temperatures at 91 and 96 degrees, respectively. Fort Lauderdale and Miami each had record temperatures of 93 on April 18, 2020, when the heat in South Florida stayed in the lower 90s for a stretch.

Relief should come Monday in the form of a cold front that is expected to stall just to our north, but will allow for moisture to work in from the south and east.

“On Monday, we finally start to recover,” Hadi said. “We have those showers working in so we have a little bit more humid air on Monday.”

Here are the record high temperatures that could be tied or broken this weekend, April 16-18, according to the National Weather Service:

Fort Lauderdale: 94 degrees(1965);92 (1939);93 (2020)

West Palm Beach: 94 degrees(2020);93 (1972);93 (2015)

Miami: 93 degrees(1965);91 (1908);93 (2020)
