AROUND THE HORN

-

■ Red Sox: Kiké Hernández led off with a replay-aided HR and Bobby Dalbec worked a 14-pitch walk in a six-run first, helping the Red Sox beat the White Sox 11-4 on Monday in the first Patriots’ Day game played apart from the Boston Marathon. The Marathon was moved to Oct. 11 because of Massachusetts limits on crowds during the coronavirus pandemic. The Patriots’ Day game, with a start shortly after 11 a.m., has been played by the Red Sox since 1959. It drew a limited crowd of 4,738. White Sox starter Lucas Giolito (1-1) was removed with two on and no outs in the second. He allowed eight runs — seven earned — and eight hits as his ERA more than doubled from 2.55 to 5.79. Nathan Eovaldi (3-1) matched his career-high with 10 strikeouts in 6 ⅓ innings, allowing four runs and nine hits with no walks. J.D. Martinez had two RBIs with a solo HR and single, and Alex Verdugo hit a solo HR for the Red Sox, who split the four-game series. The Red Sox had lost three of four games following a nine-game winning streak. The Red Sox wore white uniforms with red letters that read “Boston” across the front, which they’ve worn on Patriots’ Day since the first game back after the Marathon bombings in 2013.

■ Marlins: OF Starling Marte will be sidelined for at least a few games with a broken left rib. An MRI revealed a non-displaced fracture, meaning the rib maintained its proper alignment. Marte will refrain from activity for five to seven days before being evaluated, and he’s expected to go on the IL. Marte grimaced while batting with two outs in the ninth inning of Sunday’s loss to the Giants and left the game. He’s batting .316 with three stolen bases and two HRs.

■ Braves: OF Ronald Acuña Jr. is day to day after an MRI revealed a mild abdominal strain, the Braves announced. Acuña left Sunday night’s 13-4 victory over the Cubs. Acuña is batting .419 with seven HRs and 16 RBIs in 16 games. He has scored an MLB-best 21 runs. The reigning NL East champs have been hit hard by injuries during a rough start to the season. Pitchers Max Fried, Drew Smyly and Sean Newcomb and OFs Cristian Pache and Ender Inciarte have been placed on the 10-day IL since Wednesday.

■ Reds: The two-game suspension of OF Nick Castellanos for his role in an on-field brawl during the season’s opening weekend was upheld by MLB special assistant John McHale Jr. Castellanos will serve the penalty during the first two games of a three-game series against the Diamondbacks that starts Tuesday. Michael Hill, MLB’s new senior VP for on-field operations, issued the suspension April 5 and cited Castellanos for “his aggressive actions and for instigating a benches-clearing incident” during a game against the Cardinals on April 3. Castellanos, who homered on opening day and hopped out of the batter’s box before tossing his bat, was hit by a pitch from Cards pitcher Jake Woodford in the fourth inning on April 3. Castellanos retrieved the ball and offered to toss it back to Woodford before flipping it out of play. A wild pitch sent Castellanos scampering home from third and he scored with a headfirst slide for a 7-2 lead, bumping into Woodford, who took the throw from catcher Yadier Molina at the plate. As Castellanos began walking away, Molina rushed up and tapped him from behind, and the benches and bullpens emptied. Castellanos was ejected.
