Find your fix for food, beer and art at Sistrunk Marketplace

- By Arlene Borenstein-Zuluaga

What can you do with a 20,000 square foot space? A lot.

Sistrunk Marketplace and Brewery will take you from Japan to Latin America, the distance of a short conga line, with bites like omakase sushi and scratch-made empanadas that will help fill the tank before a stop at Khoffner Brewing, where craft options include smoky pineapple beer.

The food hall opened in August 2020 and houses about 12 food stalls that highlight a multicultural dining experience that can hit almost any craving.

But it’s art appreciation creating the newest buzz with the launch of SMArtWalk at Sistrunk Marketplace and Brewery. The event, which began in March, highlights one local artist on the last Saturday of every month and displays their work for purchase from 6 to 9 p.m.

Let’s Go, South Florida host Arlene Borenstein sits down with April’s featured artist, Diane Portwood. The 23-year-old is a mixed media artist who uses spray paint, neon components and LED lights for her work that is provocative and inspirational. Portwood is a Gold Medal-winning junior Olympian in the equestrian sport of eventing, but a tragic accident stopped her from competing.

“As hard as that was, because that was really what I saw myself doing for the rest of my life, it opened the door for the art thing. Because when I was stuck in a wheelchair, all I could do was really paint,” said Portwood.

You can see Portwood’s work at the Club Soda Lounge inside the marketplace on Saturday, April 24. Registration is required in advance at SistrunkMarketplace.com. Click on Experiences. The monthly event is on the same day as the art walk in nearby F.A.T Village.

Reservations to dine at the marketplace are not required, but are recommended.

Sistrunk Marketplace and Brewery is at 115 NW Sixth St. in Fort Lauderdale. Doors open at 4 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 11 a.m. Fridays, and 10 a.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays. SistrunkMarketplace. com.
