Railroad work to close major roads throughout Palm Beach County

Shutdowns are due to railroad maintenance

BOCA RATON — Maintenance work will shut down roads in Boynton Beach, West Palm Beach and other cities through Palm Beach County throughout the month of May.

Work on the railroad will affect Boynton Beach from 6 a.m. Tuesday through May 13, according to a city spokeswoman.

In West Palm Beach, 45th Street at the Florida East Coast Railroad Crossing will be closed starting at 6 a.m. Monday, lasting through 6 p.m. May 28. There will be eastbound lane closures and southbound left turn lane closures at Greenwood Avenue. Traffic will be detoured via Greenwood Avenue, 36th Street, Broadway and 46th Street, according to the county.

Lake Avenue west of Dixie Highway in Lake Worth Beach will also be closed to vehicular traffic from May 16 at 6 a.m. to May 18 at 11:59 p.m. The following detours will be in place:

■ Traffic on eastbound Lake Avenue will be directed to turn left onto North F Street.

■ At Lucerne Avenue, traffic will be directed to turn left.

■ At the roundabout, traffic will be directed to take the exit to South A Street to the south.

■ At 6th Avenue South, traffic will be directed to turn left.

■ At Dixie Highway, traffic will be directed to turn left back onto Lake Avenue.

In Jupiter, at the north end of the county, there will be intermittent closures at the railroad crossing at East Riverside Drive and Alternate A1A through May for Brightline’s expansion from West Palm Beach to Orlando. Motorists should

expect one- to two-minute intermittent closures of the intersection from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through May. The closures will allow trucks to deliver material for an upcoming bridge construction project.

A schedule of all the planned work wasn’t available and a representative at the Florida East Coast Railway did not respond to request for comment, but work began in Boca Raton last Saturday and will affect Boynton Beach in the middle of the month and West Palm Beach through the end of the month.

A Palm Beach County roads department official said sometimes they get notice of planned work weeks or months in advance, but sometimes they don’t find out until just a few days before.

The Florida East Coast, a private company, is paying for the majority of the work and the Florida Department of Transportation is assisting with some costs, using state funds designed to be used for work on railroad crossings on state roads.

The railroad runs from Jacksonville, where the company is headquartered, to Miami.
