State reports 4,165 new COVID cases, 86 more deaths

With more than 9.1 million Floridians vaccinated with at least one dose, the number of new daily cases in Florida has stabilized.

Florida reported 4,165 new coronaviru­s cases on Friday and another 86 new resident deaths linked to COVID-19. The state has now reported 2,262,598 cases since the pandemic began.

The seven-day average for new cases had climbed as high as 17,991 on Jan. 8. On Friday it was 4,154.

South Florida

South Florida counties reported 1,403 new COVID cases on Friday.

Palm Beach County: 277 additional cases and 7 more deaths. The county now has 144,892 confirmed cases and 2,842 deaths, including 54 non-residents.

Broward County: 415 additional cases and 5 more deaths. Broward has a known total of 239,249 cases and 2,997 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic. The death tally includes 49 non-residents.

Miami-Dade County: 711 additional cases and 14 new deaths. The county now has 489,014 confirmed cases and 6,281 deaths, including 49 non-residents.

Testing and positivity.

The state reported a daily positivity rate of 4.70% on Friday, down from 4.99% the day before. This method of calculatin­g positivity counts new infections only, but also counts repeat negative tests, which skews the figure downward.

According to the state, the newly reported case numbers reflect the results of 91,467 COVID-19 tests of Florida residents received from labs in the past day, down from 92,590 results reported the day before.

The positivity rate for all three South Florida counties dropped slightly on Friday.

Palm Beach County: Test results for 7,073 residents were reported Friday, leading to a daily positivity rate of 3.89%. That’s down from 4.44% the previous day.

Broward County: Test results for 10,106 residents were reported Friday, leading to a daily positivity rate of 4.11%. That’s down from 4.61% the previous day.

Miami-Dade County: Test results for 18,042 residents were reported Friday, leading to a daily positivity rate of 4.52%. That’s down from 4.70% the previous day.

Deaths

The daily death count has been below 100 a day for all of May.

The state’s pandemic data report shows a total of 35,635 Floridians have died from COVID-19. In addition, 711 non-residents have died after contractin­g the virus. That represents a total of 36,346 people in Florida who died from COVID. Most of the fatalities reported Friday happened over several weeks but were just confirmed in the past day.

Out of all 50 states and the District of Columbia, Florida ranks No. 23 for deaths per 100K residents and No. 16 for cases per 100K residents, according to the latest data from the health department and the COVID Tracking Project.

Hospitaliz­ations

Hospitaliz­ations in Florida with the primary diagnosis of COVID-19 have declined slightly in the last two weeks after a slight uptick in April

As of Friday, there were 2,850 people hospitaliz­ed throughout the state with a primary diagnosis of COVID-19, according to the state Agency for Health Care Administra­tion.

In South Florida, Broward County reported 403 people hospitaliz­ed from COVID, Palm Beach County had 208 and Miami-Dade had 451.

Vaccines

More than 9.1 million people in Florida have been vaccinated with one or more doses as of Friday. In Florida, 2,437,366 people have received their first dose of the COVID vaccine only, or about 11.35% of the population.

So far, 6,663,786 people have completed the series of doses required to be fully vaccinated. That represents about 31.03% of the population.
