Major retail pharmacies offering third dose of vaccines

- By Kathy Laskowski South Florida Sun Sentinel and Austin Fuller

Major retail pharmacies are now offering a third dose of the coronavirus vaccine to people who have moderately or severely compromised immune systems.

Publix, Winn-Dixie, Walmart, Walgreens and CVS are accepting appointments or walk-in recipients to get the booster vaccines. The shots come at no cost to the customer.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends individuals with moderately to severely compromised immune systems get an additional dose at least 28 days after receiving the second shot of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines. The third shot should be the same brand as the first two.

At this time, only those people who are immunocompromised are allowed the third dose. A booster for the remainder of people who received vaccines is under study and expected to be recommended and available to the general public by the end of September.

To get the booster:
