I am a Trump voter, and I support Joe Biden’s infrastructure plans

I lived the American dream, but now I’m struggling and need help. I came to America from Nicaragua when I was 14 years old with almost nothing. Now, with a wife of 25 years and as a proud father of two smart, successful, teenage boys, I feel so grateful for my family, community and all the opportunities that South Florida provided me that I worked so hard for.

I built a used car business from scratch with my brother, and we’ve been running it together ever since. Before the pandemic, business was good. I was never rich, but I was able to pay my bills, bring money back to the house, and even store a little for savings. Business was going up little by little, but after the pandemic hit, everything went downhill.

When everything shut down in the U.S., so did our business. We still had to pay rent, electricity and insurance without any revenue. We received a little bit of money from the first PPP loans, but we still had to use all of our personal savings just to keep the business going.

To make matters worse, the used car market is out of control right now, and there are fewer cars on the market than ever. Car prices have been increasing at least 10% each month a while now, and it’s leaving us with no inventory and razorthin margins.

My mortgage is $1,400. When you add on electricity, water, internet, gas, tolls, food and child care expenses, it gets to be too much. Especially when I’m still expected to pay for rent and insurance for the business each month. We’ve run through our savings, skipped vacations and even had to start running up debt on our credit cards until some money came in — we’ve tried everything.

We need to get some money for the people. We are suffering. I know people across South Florida who can’t afford rent and are going to become homeless — it’s a dire situation, and we need the government to listen to us.

That’s why I joined the organization WorkMoney, which brings together everyday Americans to push our elected officials in Washington to fight for people who just want to work hard and take care of our families.

As a member of WorkMoney, I advocated for the stimulus checks along with thousands of others across political parties. When those checks came, I saw the difference immediately at my business. People started buying and selling cars like before the pandemic, and it was amazing to see the impact that our elected

officials finally made in our lives after months and years of inaction.

I voted for Trump in 2020 because I am tired of inaction, and I want the government to work for people like me. But I respect that Joe Biden is our president, and I’m encouraged by the stimulus checks and investments in South Florida’s crumbling infrastructure. However, we need more just to get by.

My family needs investments in child care so I can afford clothes, uniforms, school supplies and food for my boys. We need the government to help lower the cost of utilities because we can’t afford sky high bills for internet, water, electricity and gas.

But most of all, we need jobs to come back to the area. I came here and found the American dream by opening a small business and building a family here. That dream is in danger of slipping away, and I’m calling on Congress to think about hard working people like me, and invest in us.
