Police say Roberto Wagner Fernandes killed three women in South Florida — and possibly more — in 2000 and 2001. But it would be two decades before they identified the serial killer.

1999

June 22, 2000

■ „ Two motorists discover the body of Kimberly Dietz-Livesey, 35, of Fort Lauderdale, inside a suitcase left along a road in Cooper City.

Aug. 9, 2000

„ ■ Broward Sheriff ’s Office detectives meet with Cooper City police to discuss similarities in Demas’ and Livesey’s deaths.

Aug. 30, 2001

■ The body of Jessica Good, 24, is found floating in Biscayne Bay in Miami. She had been stabbed repeatedly.

„ ■ Police learn from Good’s boyfriend that she was supposed to go out with a man who drove a van. The boyfriend gives police the number associated with the van, which leads police to contact the company that owned the van. The company tells police Fernandes was the sole employee driving the van at the time, the Sheriff ’s Office said.

„ ■ Police obtain a search warrant for the van and Fernandes’ apartment and collect

DNA evidence that matched DNA found underneath Good’s fingernails. They did not yet know Fernandes’ whereabouts or that he was connected to Demas’ and DietzLivesey’s murders.

Sept. 1, 2001

■ „ Fernandes flees the U.S. to Brazil. He would never return to the states.

2003

■ „ Fernandes is identified as a rape suspect in Brazil, according to the sheriff ’s office.

December 2005

■ „ Fernandes, a licensed pilot, dies in a plane crash while flying the plane from Brazil to Paraguay at age 40.

2011

■ „ Authorities connect Good’s murder in Miami with the deaths of Dietz-Livesey and Demas in Broward County. The connection leads police to investigate Fernandes as the killer.

„ ■ Investigators go to Brazil in search of Fernandes and learn he had died in 2005. They continue the investigation, involving Brazilian National Police, the U.S. Department of Justice and the FBI.

October 2020

■ „A Brazilian judge gives authorities permission to exhume Fernandes’ body and collect DNA, which is later matched with evidence from the womens’ murders.

Aug. 31, 2021
