Two players added to team practice squad
MIAMI GARDENS — The Miami Dolphins filled out their 16-man practice squad on Thursday, and it included the addition of two new names that weren’t with the team during training camp.
Wide receiver and Deerfield Beach High alum Brandon Powell appeared on the Dolphins’ practice squad roster on Thursday, along with offensive lineman Kion Smith.
Powell played for the Florida Gators in college after a standout high school career as a running back at Deerfield Beach.
He attended the Buffalo Bills’ training camp before being released Monday. The Dolphins now have two practice-squad players that were in camp elsewhere in the AFC East after also claiming cornerback Elijah Campbell from the New York Jets.
Powell has NFL active-roster experience with the Detroit Lions and Atlanta Falcons from 2018 to 2020. He has 23 career receptions for 198 yards and two touchdowns.
The Dolphins were in the market for a practice-squad receiver after Malcolm Perry was claimed by the New England Patriots on Tuesday.
Smith is an undrafted rookie out of Fayetteville State that spent time in Falcons training camp. The
Dolphins would have gotten a look at him when Atlanta came down to Miami for joint practices and a preseason game Aug. 21.
After the Dolphins also added 11-year veteran and former Hollywood Hills High standout Jabaal Sheard and claimed Campbell, they have now reached the 16-player practice squad limit.
Miami’s practice squad also includes: Quarterback Reid Sinnett, running backs Gerrid Doaks, Patrick Laird and Jordan Scarlett, wide receiver Kirk Merritt, offensive linemen Cameron Tom, Adam Pankey and Durval Queiroz Neto, linebackers Calvin Munson and Shaquem Griffin and defensive backs Javaris Davis and Tino Ellis.
