- By David Schutz

Florida on Monday reported 23,930 new COVID-19 cases from Saturday and Sunday as the 7-day average dropped to its lowest level since July 25, according to CDC data.

Sunday’s report of 6,995 new cases was the lowest since July 12, the data shows. Florida also increased its total death count by 968 on Monday, but those deaths were spread out over several days.

Deaths are counted on the day they occur, not the day they are reported, and can take up to two weeks or more to be reflected in the data.

August remains the most deadly month of the pandemic, with 7,622 deaths in Florida.

At least 49,251 Floridians have died of COVID since the start of the pandemic.

The state is now averaging 12,451 new COVID-19 cases and 325 deaths over a seven-day period.

The rolling average of new COVID cases is 42.5% lower than it was one month ago, Aug. 12.

The Florida Hospital Association reported 11,215 patients were hospitalized with COVID as of Monday, down 170 from a day earlier. The 7-day trend is down 15.4%.

Here are the latest statistics: The state ranks eighth in the nation for cases per 100,000 population and second in per capita deaths, according to New York Times data.

On Sept. 9, Florida reported a decline in its positivity rate, though it remains one of the highest in the nation. The positivity rate in Florida declined from 15.2% to 13.5, a further indication the state may have passed the peak of the delta surge. The state releases positivity data weekly.
