5 THINGS WE LEARNED

- — Omar Kelly and Steve Svekis

Albert Wilson getting off to slow start: Last week Wilson was a non-factor in Miami’s win over New England. This week Wilson dropped two catchable balls against Buffalo. Both could have kept drives alive, and gotten Miami into scoring territory. This isn’t the same player who dominated the first week of training camp before being shut down for a calf injury. With Will Fuller absence from the team for personal reasons and his status uncertain, the Dolphins need a third receiver to step up.

The shutout is over for Obgah, who has come close to nearly half a dozen sacks in the first two games, but has struggled to close out on plays. Ogbah got Bills QB Josh Allen down midway in the third quarter, taking him down on a thirddown play, and the negative yards convinced the Bills to kick a field goal. The stats crew split the sack between Ogbah and Andrew Van Ginkel, who cleaned up the play at the end. But

Emmanuel Ogbah finally gets a sack:

Ogbah’s consistent pressure was one of the few bright spots from Sunday’s game.

Mike Gesicki losing ground: Gesicki should be an intricate part of the Dolphins offense based on what he’s done the past two seasons, but so far he’s been relegated to role-player status. Durham Smythe and Cethan Carter started Sunday’s game against he Bills, and Gesicki found himself in the game on obvious passing downs. He finished the contest with three receptions for 41 yards on the six passes thrown his way.

Look away: This is what the Dolphins’ five first-round draft picks of the past two years did on Sunday:

Fifth pick in 2020 (QB Tua Tagovailoa): 1 for 4 for 13 yards, sacked three times. Knocked out of game with bruised ribs; 18th pick in 2020 (LT Austin Jackson): In the midst of the sieve pass-blocking display that took out Tagovailoa and got replacement

Jacoby Brissett hammered multiple times; 30th pick in 2020 (CB Noah Igbinoghene): Inactive as a healthy scratch; seventh pick in 2021 (WR Jaylen Waddle): A lost muffed punt and two drops in the passing game. Had six catches, but for only 48 yards; 18th pick in 2021 (DE Jaelan Phillips): For the second straight week, a clean uniform at the end of the game and a non-factor.

Dolphins are now on a record-long losing streak against the Bills: The Dolphins, who never lost to the Bills during the decade of the 1970s — absorb that, 20 wins in a row — fell for the sixth consecutive time to Buffalo on Sunday. Incredibly that ties the franchise record for successive losses to the team from Orchard Park, N.Y. Previously Miami lost their half-dozen straight from 1987-89, in the midst of a 1-10 slide vs. Jim Kelly and company.
