Western WR Johnson named to UA All-American team

Another one of South Florida’s top senior football players will play in a prestigious postseason all-star game.

Western wide receiver got his Under Armour All-America Game jersey on Tuesday. He will get the opportunity to play in the game, which will take place on Jan. 2, 2022 at Camping World Stadium in Orlando.

“It feels great,” Johnson said. “It’s an honor. It’s a blessing.”

Johnson is one of two local players participating in the game, along with Chaminade-Madonna defensive lineman Kenyatta Jackson Jr.

“I’m very excited,” Johnson said. “This is one of the jerseys I can hang up on my wall.”

Five other local players — American Heritage’s Marvin Jones Jr. and Earl Little Jr., Coconut Creek’s Trevell Mullen, Dillard’s Nyjalik Kelly and St. Thomas Aquinas’ Julian Armella — are playing in the All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas, on Jan. 8, 2022.

Johnson said he’s looking forward to playing with some of his friends who will also be participating in the Under Armour Game, including Evan Stewart, Khamauri Rogers and Jacoby Mathews.

“I’m just looking forward to having fun,” Johnson said. “I’ve got ... a lot of friends that got invited, and I’m looking forward to playing with friends.”

Johnson has played in three games for Western and has 13 catches for 171 yards and one touchdown. “I feel great about the team,” Johnson said. “We’re looking strong. ... We’re just getting our feet wet and just building more chemistry as a team.”

As a junior for Isidore Newman High in Louisiana, Johnson had 40 receptions for 558 yards and six touchdowns last season.

Johnson is rated a four-star prospect in 247 Sports’ composite rankings. He is listed as the No. 40 wide receiver and No. 260 player in the 2022 class.

Johnson was previously an LSU commit. He said he’s looking at several Southeastern Conference schools, including Florida and Georgia. He’s also looking at Miami and Florida State.
