Jeep Grand Cherokee to offer an electrified version beginning next year
Jeep’s flagship SUV is about to be electrified.
The two-row 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee will add a plug-in hybrid electric version to its lineup.
The Grand Cherokee 4xe will join a 4xe version of the Jeep Wrangler as the brand’s first two plug-in hybrids available in the United States.
Electrified versions of the Compass and Renegade are available in Europe.
“This is another important step toward achieving our global vision of zero-emission freedom,” said Jeep Brand CEO Christian Meunier. “By 2025, we plan to offer a fully electric Jeep vehicle in every SUV segment.”
The introduction of an additional plug-in hybrid vehicle comes on the heels of announcements that Stellantis, Jeep’s parent company, plans a battery-electric Ram 1500 pickup and Dodge muscle car in 2024.
The company, which formed this year from the merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Peugeot maker PSA Group, has promised $35 billion in electrification-related investments by the middle of the decade.
This marks the fifth-generation of the Grand Cherokee, which debuted notably in 1992 by smashing through a glass window at Detroit’s Cobo Hall, now TCF Center, as part of that year’s annual auto show. The new two-row Grand Cherokee shares a vehicle architecture with the three-row Grand Cherokee L, which launched this year.
Both vehicles are built at Stellantis’ new assembly complex in Detroit.
The Mack plant, which is on the site of a former engine plant complex, was the first new vehicle assembly plant built in the city in decades.
