Giants’ Ryan apologizes for potshot

- By Pat Leonard

New York Giants safety Logan Ryan apologized Thursday for his postgame jab at Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa following Sunday’s game at Hard Rock Stadium, a 20-9 Dolphins victory.

“I want to apologize to Tua,” Ryan said after practice. “I didn’t mean any disrespect.”

Ryan said he was only trying to be funny when he had said that as a high school quarterback, “a lot like Tua I was a lefty, I could throw two-yard passes to the left.”

But Dolphins receiver DeVante Parker responded to Ryan on Instagram by telling him: “Hold that L boi keep quiet.”

And Ryan genuinely said he felt bad about a joke gone wrong.

“I made a light-hearted comment about me playing quarterback,” he said. “I think he’s a good player. He’s humble. He approaches the game the right way, and he made game-winning plays to beat us, and they won the game.

“I’m not a sore loser,” Ryan continued. “I don’t hate on players in the league. I have a lot of respect for players in this league. I’ve been in this league, and he’s doing it the right way. I wish him the best and I want him to know there’s no disrespect there or any bad beef there. Just a comment that went the wrong way and I was trying to be funny, and it wasn’t funny, and I don’t want to disrespect him.”

Ryan is actually one of two Giants defensive backs who were nominated for prestigious awards this week. He is the Giants’ NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee due to his many off-field endeavors, including his work to help animals through Ryan’s Monthly Rescue and Ryan’s Animal Rescue Foundation (RARF).

“I’m honored to be the nominee for the Giants,” Ryan said. “I really want to win it and I really want to win it for the animal people out there. I do work with kids and police reform as well, but to highlight the animal people, I really want to win it for them and support them and give them notice.”

Corner James Bradberry, meanwhile, is the Giants’ nominee for the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award that recognizes on-field sportsmanship, fair play, integrity, and respect for the game and opponents.
